Education & Outreach

Communication and Outreach is a big part of what we do at UINR.

One of our goals at UINR is to reach people in our communities and work with them to determine what information they need and want. It is important for us to get that information to them in innovative ways that have the most impact.

We are active on Facebook and Twitter, we produce a host of educational publications, videos and reports, and our website contains a wealth of information, news, photographs and videos.

Every year, we engage community members from across Unama’ki with our annual Feast in the Highlands, our Charlie Joe Dennis Ice Fishing event, a number of forest walks, snowshoe treks, tree planting events, and other outreach activities. We host a week-long summer program for high school youth, called Nikani Awtiken, a Mi’kmaw phrase meaning “trail blazing” or “creating a new path”.  It is an opportunity for rich cultural experiences, immersing youth in Traditional Mi’kmaw Knowledge and natural resource management.

Before this camp, my cultural identity was important to me, but I felt a bit disconnected. This program helped me gain knowledge and confidence.  Such precious and valuable knowledge that I will keep growing.  Our culture is strong and amazing!” - Nikani Awtiken participant
